How to Say ‘No to All’ During File Copy Operations in Windows

While copying or moving a large number of files from one location to another folder in Windows, you may often encounter errors or warning messages saying the file(s) you are trying to copy already exists in the target location.

no to all in windows

Windows No to All – Keyboard Shortcut

If you are using a previous version of Windows (like XP or Windows 2000 but not Vista), the default error window will offer four choices – "Yes", "No", "Yes to All" and "Cancel".
There’s no "No to All" button in the File Replacement dialog but you can simply hold down the Shift Key before pressing the No button and Windows will automatically interpret this action as a "No to All" command.
This will be so useful when you are copying a large number of files and folders but don’t want to overwrite content that already exists at the target.

vista-copy-paste

In case of Windows Vista, Microsoft designed a more intuitive warning message with a check box that lets you repeat the same operation on all upcoming conflicts.

A Better Disk Defragmenter Utility from Microsoft

One of the reasons why your computer may become slow over time is because the files on the hard drive can become fragmented. Now what’s that?

Disk Fragmentation for Non-Techies
As you start filling your hard-drive with new programs, documents, and other files, the operating system tries to find vacant places on the hard-drive to place these files. Like an artist who breaks a tile into multiple pieces to form a mosaic, your computer will break these file into chunks (or fragments) and store them in different places across your hard drive.

When you load a program or open a file, the computer will have to first assemble these "fragmented" pieces thus decreasing the performance. And fragmentation is not just an issue with your computer’s hard disk but even removable devices like the USB Flash Drive or your external drives can also become fragmented with time.

Alternate Windows Disk Defragmenter from Microsoft
A Disk Defragmenter program helps because it will pre-arrange all the "fragmented" pieces of a file close together thus reducing the time it takes to open files or load programs on your computer.

Now almost every version of Windows includes a disk defragmenter utility but the problem with these built-in tools is that that will defragment the entire hard-drive at once and they’ll ignore files that are smaller than 64 MB. Luckily, Microsoft offers another free but lesser-known utility called Contig (short for contiguous) that lets you have more control over the defragmentation process.

What’s unique about Contig is that it lets you defragment individual files, folders, or the entire hard drive. You can run Contig from the command prompt but if that sounds a bit technical, you can also look at Power Defragmenter – an easy and more visual interface for Contig.

Using Power Defragmenter, you can visually select files, folders, or the drive you wish to defragment, and Power Defragmenter will internally use Contig to perform the defragmentation process. You may use Contig on machines running Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7.

For instance, if I were to defragment all the documents on my disk and none of the other files, the command* will be:

Contig.exe -v -s c:\Users\labnol\Documents\*.*[*] You’ll need to run the utility as an administrator as it will throw an "Access denied" error.

And here’s a detailed output of a standard Contig command that tells you exactly what happens behind the scenes per file.

Unlike other third-party defragmentation tools, Contig uses Windows’ internal defragmentation APIs so it won’t cause disk corruption, even if you terminate the program while its running.

Please note, however, that defragmentation is only recommended for traditional hard drives; computers using newer flash memory based solid-state drives should not use traditional defragmenters. Even though file fragmentation may occur on these drives, it should not impact performance due to the nature of flash memory. Additionally, defragmentation may actually decrease the life of a solid-state drive; however, they cannot cause this on a traditional platter-based hard drive.

Change Default Icons in Windows XP

1) Start Windows in your normal fashion.

2) Click the Start menu and select the "My Computer" option. Alternately, you can double-click the "My Computer" desktop icon if you've enabled it to appear on the desktop.

3) Double-click on your hard drive to open the directory.
4) Find the program for which you wish to change the associated icon. You'll need to know its location on the hard drive. If you don't know where it is, you can use the Start menu "Search" feature to locate it.
5) Right-click on the file, and click the "Properties" menu option. This will open the Properties menu for the file.
6) Click the "Change Icon" button. If there is no "Change Icon" button, you will need to create a desktop icon instead. To do so, cancel out of the Properties menu and right-click the file again. This time, select "Send to -> Desktop (create shortcut)."
7) Click on one of the icons that appears in the list. If the icon you want isn't on the list, click the "Browse" button to search for more icons.
8) Click "OK" once you've chosen the icon you'd like to use.
9) Click "Apply" to confirm your changes, and then click "OK" to close the window.
10) Wait a moment to see the icon change. There are times, like when a lot of system resources are in use, when icon changes can take a moment to appear.
Recommendation from experts: "Better to use icon managers or icon packs instead of manual editing"

How to increase your Laptop Battery's Life?

Dear friends you have read many interesting tips from my site and I think you have gained more knowledge from them. Now I have a more interesting tip to increase your Laptop's battery life. There is no matter, laptop manufactures gives you the guarantee about the battery that how long it works. The battery of laptop always stops working very early at some stage in essential research, just like when you are watching a DVD movie.

Follow the few steps to increase the laptop battery's life:

Lower the backlighting on your screen.

The screen of your Laptop takes up significant amount of power and you do not require its maximum brightness. You should have to check your system and decrease the screen brightness it to a comfortable point.

Stop your wireless signal when you are not using.

After turning off your Laptop can save max. 20 minutes of your laptop's battery time because WiFi can use a considerable quantity of power. By right clicking you can stop your WiFi signal when you are not using.

Manage the correct power scheme in XP

Windows XP contain a number of predetermined power plans, which control settings like how rapidly your laptop turns off and when your screen saver boots in. You can change your laptop power scheme by choosing Control Panel > Power Options. For max. Battery life from the "Power scheme" chooses the option "Max. Battery" and decline the list. There are good choices for you just like "Low Power Mode" and Portable /Laptop. They don't conserve as much power as Max Battery. After selecting a power scheme you click Ok button to finish the process.

How you can Automate the DIR Command

If your are using same switches frequently in Command prompt then open your system command prompt using open Run option

How to remove Windows Messenger!!

Theoretically, you can get rid of it (as well as a few other things). Windows 2000 power users should already be familiar with this tweak.

Fire up the Windows Explorer and navigate your way to the %SYSTEMROOT% \ INF folder. What the heck is that thingy with the percentage signs? It's a variable. For most people, %SYSTEMROOT% is C:\Windows. For others, it may be E:\WinXP. Get it? Okay, on with the hack! In the INF folder, open sysoc.inf (but not before making a BACKUP copy first). Before your eyes glaze over, look for the line containing "msmsgs" in it. Near the end of that particular line, you'll notice that the word "hide" is not so hidden. Go ahead and delete "hide" (so that the flanking commas are left sitting next to one another). Save the file and close it. Now, open the Add and Remove Programs applet in the Control Panel. Click the Add / Remove Windows Components icon. You should see "Windows Messenger" in that list. Remove the checkmark from its box, and you should be set. NOTE: there are other hidden system components in that sysoc.inf file, too. Remove "hide" and the subsequent programs at your own risk.

Speed up your browsing of Windows 2000 & XP machines

Here's a great tip to speed up your browsing of Windows XP machines. Its actually a fix to a bug installed as default in Windows 2000 that scans shared files for Scheduled Tasks. And it turns out that you can experience a delay as long as 30 seconds when you try to view shared files across a network because Windows 2000 is using the extra time to search the remote computer for any Scheduled Tasks. Note that though the fix is originally intended for only those affected, Windows 2000 users will experience that the actual browsing speed of both the Internet & Windows Explorers improve significantly after applying it since it doesn't search for Scheduled Tasks anymore. Here's how :

Open up the Registry and go to :

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/RemoteComputer/NameSpace

Under that branch, select the key :

{D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}

and delete it.

This is key that instructs Windows to search for Scheduled Tasks. If you like you may want to export the exact branch so that you can restore the key if necessary.

This fix is so effective that it doesn't require a reboot and you can almost immediately determine yourself how much it speeds up your browsing processes.

BLOCK WEBSITES WITHOUT ANY SOFTWARES

Steps

1] Browse C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc
2] Find the file named "HOSTS"
3] Open it in notepad
4] Under "127.0.0.1 localhost" Add 127.0.0.2 www.orkut.com , and that site will no longer be accessable.
5] Done!

example :

127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.2 www.orkut.com

- www.orkut.com is now unaccessable

For every site after that you want to add, just add "1" to the last number in the internal ip (127.0.0.2) and then the addy like before.

IE:
127.0.0.3 www.yahoo.com
127.0.0.4 www.msn.com
127.0.0.5 www.google.com

This also works with banner sites, just find the host name of the server with the banners and do the same thing with that addy.

Hoep this small tutorial could keep you going in simple way of blocking websites
