The safety of our women - The new brand ambassador

It is indeed a shame to me, you and the entire Indian society  that the safety of our women are now used as an advertising aid and one the major weak points of our hearts are now driving our pockets. I myself along with every fellow citizen is well aware of the security flaws in the life's of our women. But that it is not something that has to be sold in the market. These flaws and insecure feelings are to be addressed and resolved for the well being of our sisters and mothers in India. But the trend that we see now is that mobile phone companies advertising their product as a women's safety aid just because they have an application that can track a person in case of an emergency. As every technically aware guy knows, it is nothing special about the mobile, but it is just an application that can be installed on any advanced device. And I hardheartedly appreciate the people who advertise pointing out this particular option and sell their devices. They actually have found out the idea to use this stigma of our nation as a means of better result and sales. We can never blame them for taking such a step, as it is we the society who created that space for them.

A father or a brother who is least aware of the technological advances would easily fall in such products, as safety and love is blind in every part of the nation. It is not such only with the mobile phones or the gadget industry, we are being used in every walk of life. You can find gadgets, supermarkets, technological products, various industries and even plastic products that promise to keep our women safe. Is that what we need? Is that how we believe to build up our nation's economy?

A foreigner who lands at any of our airports, would definitely see advertisements that points out the women are prone to danger in India. Being a country that has a huge potential in the tourism industry, this is not how we should portray ourselves. Instead of making our guests feel safe, we are actually threatening them of the stigma of our society, even through the ads placed in and around our city, in the news papers and the visual medias, everywhere. Being one of the most powerful and the most promising developing nation, this is not the image that we should build upon in millions of hearts.

As every one asks, what can I do for this? How can I interfere? How much role can I play?
Can you please stop using our flaws to make bank accounts grow stronger? Can you please stop using our women and their safety to enhance your trade? Would you please represent our nation with pride in front of our guests?

Let us together make a change.

Misusing Blogger Addresses

Hi readers,

Today I am onto a very sad issue faced by the bloggers around the world. As you all know blogger is a free blogging platform, which is utilized by millions of people. Most of the "hot" addresses in blogger have been already registered, this is a happy news, but most of them are not using the addresses well and some of them don't even touch it.

As you all know the Fifa World Cup 2010 is approaching, less than a month left. There are many bloggers around the world trying to blog about the world's greatest football tournament. But the sad side is that, there aren't any suitable blog addresses available.

For example some of the misused blog addresses based on Fifa World Cup are:
http://fifaworldcup2010.blogspot.com/ - 0 Posts
http://worldcup2010.blogspot.com/     - 0 Posts
http://fifa2010.blogspot.com/               - 0 posts
http://fifaworldcup.blogspot.com/         - 0 Posts
http://worldcup.blogspot.com/             - Last post on Sunday, July 21, 2002
http://fifa.blogspot.com/                      - Last post on Monday, July 01, 2002

If these blog addresses are used by deserved bloggers, lots and lots of latest Fifa World Cup buzz would have bashed into the internet. But all these addresses are just wasted.

Why cant Google have a look on the misused blogger addresses? Why cant they remove these kind of misused registrations?  These type of misused addresses are there in all groups of addresses. Eg: technology, gadgets, nature, mankind, science etc etc.

I hereby request Google to take necessary steps on this issue and help the blogging community.

The world's most expensive island online

Twenty-seven year old in Australia paid $26,500 for a virtual island considered 'most valuable virtual object' by Guinness

What is the most you're willing to pay for a virtual item in a videogame or virtual world? Five, ten dollars? How about $26,500?
That's the amount David Storey, a 27-year-old graduate student living in Sydney, Australia, paid for a virtual island, the "Most valuable object that is virtual," according to Guinness World Records.

It's easy to write off Storey, who goes by the name "Deathifier," as a geek gone wild, but he now owns a million-dollar empire.

Storey runs Amethera Treasure Island, which he purchased in the virtual world Entropia, as a rare game preserve and taxes hunters on his land.

Storey says the taxes bring in more than $100,000 in real money per year.

"I thought it would be cool to own an island, and I knew I could run it and be able to pay for my play" says Storey, who has picked up skills he never imagined learning in a game. "Entropia continually evolves, so you have to constantly be watching for new developments. It's sort of like real life."

While Storey's example is extreme, buying and selling virtual goods in videogames and virtual worlds is becoming mainstream.

The virtual goods market in the US is estimated to reach $1.6 billion this year, up from $1 billion in 2009, according to research firm Inside Networks.

And the US is just a part of the worldwide market, which some experts put as high as $10 billion; countries like China and Korea are major players.

Virtual worlds and massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) like Entropia and Second Life are where virtual goods economies began.

But in recent years, casual and social games like "FarmVille" and "Pet Society" on Facebook have also become important players.

Typically, virtual transactions can be divided into two categories. In one type of transaction, you "cash in," or exchange real dollars for virtual currencies, and use the virtual currencies to buy virtual goods, like a new cow in FarmVille.

The other type of transaction lets you cash in and, like Storey, earn real money. In addition, virtual worlds and MMORPGs have also gotten very good at monetising the user; industry experts estimate that the average revenues per user usually range from $10 to $20.

In comparison, social and casual games are relatively newer, less mature markets that usually only utilize "cash in" transactions.

A fairly successful social game might have average revenues per user of a dollar or two. Still, Inside Virtual Goods estimates that sales from social games will make up more than half the total US virtual goods revenues in 2010.

How Laptops May Look Like in the Future?

You may not need a briefcase to carry your laptop in the near feature. Just roll the computer and wear it like a shoulder handbag.

Orkin Design, a design firm in Germany, has created a amazing concept computer that can be used both as a laptop and a tablet (slate). It features a large multitouch screen, USB ports, webcam, stylus and everything that you probably look for in a computer.

The sad part, you can only experience this flexible laptop in a video and we don’t know if any of the hardware companies are actually working on such a design. As one commenter points out:

" Its an interesting concept, but It is probably a long ways from any sort of actual prototype. Forget DVD drives, what about Circuit boards! They would need to find a new material instead of the current silicon, as circuit boards today cant withstand much flexibility.
I know simple circuit boards are flexible (hence rollup keyboards), but I have yet to see a flexible motherboard that supports the required watts/current of a modern chipset and processor."

Thanks labnol.org for this wonderful post.

What are gadgets or gizmos?

A gadget is a small technological object (such as a device or an appliance) that has a particular function, but is often thought of as a novelty. Gadgets are invariably considered to be more unusually or cleverly designed than normal technology at the time of their invention. Gadgets are sometimes also referred to as gizmos.

The origins of the word "gadget" trace back to the 1800s. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, there is anecdotal evidence for the use of "gadget" as a placeholder name for a technical item whose precise name one can't remember since the 1850s; with Robert Brown's 1886 book Spunyarn and Spindrift, A sailor boy’s log of a voyage out and home in a China tea-clipper containing the earliest known usage in print. The etymology of the word is disputed. A widely circulated story holds that the word gadget was "invented" when Gaget, Gauthier & Cie, the company behind the repoussé construction of the Statue of Liberty (1886), made a small-scale version of the monument and named it after their firm; however this contradicts the evidence that the word was already used before in nautical circles, and the fact that it did not become popular until after World War I. Other sources cite a derivation from the French gâchette which has been applied to various pieces of a firing mechanism, or the French gagée, a small tool or accessory. The spring-clip used to hold the base of a vessel during glass-making is also known as a gadget. The first atomic bomb was nicknamed the gadget by the scientists of the Manhattan Project, tested at the Trinity site.

Different types of gadgets are:
> Mechanical Gadgets
> Electronic Gadgets
> Programmable Gadgets
> Application Gadgets

Well, I will explain each of them in my further posts.

Blu-ray Disks {Must Read}

Blu-ray Disc (also known as Blu-ray or BD) is an optical disc storage media format. Its main uses are high-definition video and data storage. The disc has the same dimensions as a standard DVD or CD.

The name Blu-ray Disc is derived from the blue laser (violet coloured) used to read and write this type of disc. Because of its shorter wavelength (405 nm), substantially more data can be stored on a Blu-ray Disc than on the DVD format, which uses a red (650 nm) laser. A dual layer Blu-ray Disc can store 50 GB, almost six times the capacity of a double-dual layer DVD (or more than 10 times if single-layer).

Blu-ray Disc was developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association, a group representing consumer electronics, computer hardware, and motion picture production. As of July 30, 2008 more than 720 Blu-ray Disc titles have been released in the United States and more than 460 Blu-ray Disc titles have been released in Japan.

During the high definition optical disc format war, Blu-ray Disc competed with the HD DVD format. On February 19, 2008, Toshiba — the main company supporting HD DVD — announced it would no longer develop, manufacture and market HD DVD players and recorders, leading almost all other HD DVD supporters to follow suit, effectively ending the format war.

The Blu-ray Disc physical specifications were finished in 2004. In January 2005, TDK announced that they had developed a hard coating polymer for Blu-ray Discs. The cartridges, no longer necessary, were scrapped. The BD-ROM specifications were finalized in early 2006. AACS LA, a consortium founded in 2004, had been developing the DRM platform that could be used to securely distribute movies to consumers. However, the final AACS standard was delayed, and then delayed again when an important member of the Blu-ray Disc group voiced concerns. At the request of the initial hardware manufacturers, including Toshiba, Pioneer and Samsung, an interim standard was published which did not include some features, like managed copy.

Do u prefer to buy a Blu-ray instead of a DVD or a CD?? Which will u choose??

Zombie plague sweeps the internet

Monitor and computer, Eyewire
Botnet operators are keen to hijack PCs and turn them into zombies

The summer saw a surge in the number of hijacked home PCs or "zombies", say security experts.

The Shadowserver Foundation, which tracks zombie numbers worldwide, said it had seen at least a threefold increase in the last three months.

More than 450,000 computers are now part of zombie networks, or botnets, run by hi-tech criminals, it said.

The rise is believed to be linked to attacks that booby-trap websites to try to infect the machines of visitors.

Attack vector

Criminals are keen to recruit new machines to a botnet to create a resource that they can use or which can be hired out to other gangs.

Most spam or junk mail is routed through the hijacked machines forming a botnet. The collection of PCs are often used to launch attacks on other websites, as anonymous stores for stolen data and to help with phishing scams.

The vast majority of machines in these botnets will be PCs running a version of Microsoft Windows.

In June 2008 Shadowserver Foundation knew about more than 100,000 machines that were part of a botnet. By the end of August this figure had exceeded 450,000 machines.

The Shadowserver Foundation is a group of security professionals who volunteer their time to track and measure botnets to help law enforcement investigations.

The rise in numbers has been accompanied by a fall in the number of so-called command and control (C&C) servers tracked by the Shadowserver group suggesting that hi-tech criminals are concentrating their resources. As their name implies, the C&C servers co-ordinate the use of all the machines linked to them.

The jump in individual zombie numbers is linked to a series of wide-spread attacks that inject malicious code on to legitimate websites that tries to compromise any visiting machine.

In recent months many hi-tech criminals have turned to web attacks to recruit new victims rather than rely on sending viruses out via e-mail.

Typically, a machine is compromised via a vulnerability in one of the programs it runs. Inside this initial attack program will be code that directs it to contact a C&C server which then downloads software to put it completely under the control of a botmaster.

The machines in any individual botnet can be spread across many different nations.
